Chill Pollins

Welcome to the belated latest instalment of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing. Day 27.

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

Today’s selection is dedicated to birthday boy Phil Collins.

Against All Odds – Phil Collins. Despite the fact that most of Phil Collins musical career can be filed in a bin marked “Things I Would Rather Try And Force A Switched On Toaster Up My Urethra Than Listen To” – this is the kind of thing I want this blog to celebrate. Ed Sheeran, there’s still time. Write something as magnificently fucking broken hearted as this and you might yet make the grade.

My Alcoholic Friends – Dresden Dolls. Again, on paper, not my fucking bag. Weimar Cabaret revivalists. Nein danke. Still, I was sucked in by the song title and we(i)ll it didn’t disappoint.

Happy New Year - Beverley. Randy Newman is one of the greatest song writers ever and this is, well, you already know how good it is cos Randy Newman wrote it.

Tarantula - Colourbox. This lot went on to be part of M/A/R/R/S and they wrote the 1986 World Cup theme but I’ve gone for this despite my hatred of spiders.

Hurricane (Paul Woolford Mix) – Drones Club. YES. DANCEFLOOR. Not the kind of thing one imagines old Pelham Grenville frugging to inbetween possibly racist bon mots but you know still fucking good.

Hand to Phone (Cordless Mix) - Adult. Introduced to this about a million years ago by that fucking incredible Soulwax compilation – anything that makes this gout-afflicted old soak want to hit the floor again can’t be bad.

Son of a Systems Engineer Manager (Micro Song) – Keshco. Interlude Corner. If there’s a shorter song than this in this blog’s history it will be fucking brief indeed. Like an answerphone message from Grandaddy.

Jaan Pehechaan Ho – Mohammed Rafi. That tune from Ghost World which one day I think is a film that will be viewed by future generations like Casablanca is now.

Waltz for Hal Willner – Bill Frisell. I need to get more into jazz – I seem to be drawn to the more discordant stuff, fuck knows why as I loved Jazz Club on the Fast Show.

Colours - Grouplove This is probably in an advert or something. I think this lot did the soundtrack to Bojack Horseman. Maybe it’s this song. I can’t recall. Anyway, enjoy. Tomorrow we celebrate the end of January and the birthday of Britney Spears most famous ex….
