Ll is a Welsh letter, Mr Cool J.
Welcome to Day 11 of the badly
titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing.
I was thinking
of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song.
Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine
other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in
tens.
The playlist
is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R
So, the idea was
that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself
or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.
I’m on Twitter X
thing as @fourfoot
Today’s selection.
Our featured
birthday artist is LL Cool J. I once got revenge on my brother when he was being
a particularly annoying little shit by telling his mates I saw him miming to
this song, air rapping and everything. I hadn’t seen any such thing. Sorry G.
The other songs
today….
That’s
Understanding – Tami Lynn. Don’t know much about this artist, but it’s a
lovely song. And it has the kind of epic breakdown you didn’t really see much
of back then from RnB. I think I heard about the song on Twitter.
Smokey Joe’s La
La – David Holmes. Remember the Essential Mix albums released in the late
90s? Pete Tong and all those bastards. Only one that caught my ear was this, a
fucking absolute cornucopia of funk, hip hop, soul and easy listening. And this
track from it remains as joyous as it was when I stuck it on Side 2 Track 1 of
nearly every compilation tape I made for friends/potential girlfriends back in
my Roath hole.
Purple Rose
Minuet – Susumu Yokota – a nice bit of classical Japanese ambient
electronica.
Idkwntht -
Tomberlin. The sound of falling asleep with a broken heart. The same kind of woozy ambience that Tindersticks perfected with "Seaweed."
Books About UFOs
– Husker Du. This song reminds me of my friend M. She’s fucking mental in
every sense of the word but despite that, and the fact she once made me the
very worst compilation CD anyone has ever made anyone for my birthday (I know I’m
ungrateful but come on Extreme and Mr Big were the first two artists), she remains very
special to me and this song reminds me of her even though she’d probably hate
it. If I’d known about Husker Du when they were going my teenage years would
have been very different I’m sure. As it is I lived in the middle of a cultural desert....
Taillights –
Buffalo Tom. I once bought a Buffalo Tom album when I was sofa surfing and
absolutely broke. Because it had a good review. It wasn’t very good and I
always harboured a deep grudge against them until years later I heard this and went
ah….
Popsong 99 – Anton
Barbeau. My own attempts at laying down lo-fi pop classics now thankfully expunged
from the internet, I can dig people like Anton who seems to have spent many
years making strange little records for a select few fans and not giving a fuck
about it.
Sketch for Summer
– Durutti Column. Vini Reilly is a genius.
Tomorrow, we have
ten more….including one from birthday boy Will Oldham.
Apologies for the 11 I did yesterday, symmetry fans. An accounting error.
