More than a Woman
Welcome to Day 13 of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing.
I was thinking
of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song.
Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine
other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in
tens.
The playlist
is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R
So, the idea was
that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself
or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.
I’m on Twitter X
thing as @fourfoot
Today’s selection.
Our featured
birthday artist is Aaliyah. I’m not exactly the biggest RnB fan in the world
but back in the dog days of the 20th century, if a record had
Timbaland’s name on the credits somewhere it was usually worth a listen. This song
reminds me of getting together with someone I was once very much in love with –
you know how a song sometimes seems to be everywhere you go when these things
kick off – it always feels like a song that is almost demure in its defiance, there’s
a humility to it, no Aguilera esque histrionics on show.
The other songs
today….
Golden Gaze –
Ian Brown. I wasn’t a massive Stone Roses fan. I quite liked a couple of
their songs but I was much more of a Mondays man and remain so. Ian’s solo
career contains little of interest to me but I do like this, mainly because of
the dark electro refrain.
Soul Vaccination
– Tower of Power. Because I like the idea of following an anti-vax idiot with
this song.
Beer Shits – Jeffrey
Frederick and the Clamptones – I’m so sorry. Occasionally I need a little
puerility.
Pixelated Birds –
Working in a Nuclear Free City. My pal Bianca introduced me to this lot. I felt
we needed a refresh at this point so some ambient noise was required.
A Girl Like You –
Edwyn Collins. Yeah it’s his most well known song but that doesn’t mean it’s
not one of his best. Nearly went with Seventies Night but this is such a glorious
piece of genuine pop. Nothing arch or insincere about it.
Say What You
Want (All Day Every Day) - Texas. I didn’t care for Texas. It’s like Simply
Red or Jamiroquai. It’s ASDA pop. But getting the Wu Tang Clan to fuck up one
of their songs is gloriously inspired. I reckon they knocked this up in half an
hour. Bung on a weird slightly discordant string sample, chuck on a half-arsed
sounding rap from Method Man, and I’m suddenly thinking I should reinvestigate
Spiteri and co….
Smouldering Fire
– Ural Thomas and the Pain. A forgotten soul singer rediscovered and
relaunched in his mid-seventies. It’s like a Hollywood movie except the guy
still isn’t famous. This is glorious.
Teenage Head –
Flaming Groovies. Dodgy title aside, this is a suitably sleazy bit of 70s
Stonesish rock.
When I’m Gone –
Phil Ochs – I only heard this song a few months ago but I can’t recall where.
I think it was in a film. Anyway, I like this because I’m a melancholy
motherfucker.
Tomorrow, we have
ten more….including one from birthday girl Susanna Hoffs.
