Oh Susanna

Welcome to Day 14 of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing.

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

Today’s selection.

Our featured birthday artist is Susanna Hoffs. And a properly great cover version. No, not that one. The other one.

The other songs today….

The Ghost of Cincinatti – Big Red Machine. Big Elliot Smith vibes around on this and if that puts you off, then well, there’s no helping you.

Lady Luck – Richard Swift. Slowly becoming acquainted with the late Mr Swift’s back catalogue. A wonderful songwriter, taken too soon.

Emma Blowgun’s Last Stand - Beulah – I like it when songs don’t make it obvious what direction they’re heading in. Starts off all post-rock and menacing, heads towards a kind of Californian Belle and Sebastian vibe.

1906 – West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Sounds exactly like a band with that name should do. Proper late sixties/plenty of psychedelics taken sounds….

Wildfires - Sault. Best track of the decade? Got to be up there. Smoky, broken, jazzy, quietly angry as all hell. Fucking irresistible.

Hit the Back – King Princess. It is Lana del Ciccone! It’s some kind of weird retro 80s pop shot through a 2010s filter or something. I love it. PLAY LOUD as they used to say.

Ojos Del Sol – Y La Bamba. Another one to thank Fishguard Dave for. I could get it translated but it’s clearly about some lovesick mermaid wishing her son would come back from the land and return to her underwater bosom. Or something.

Initials BB – Serge Gainsbourg. Not nearly enough anthems to Brian Blessed around for my liking. At some point I should probably dig a little deeper into Serge’s oeuvre. The French revere him like some sort of Peter Baynham-faced cultural behemoth and this is a fucking tune.

Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet – Gavin Bryars – I once listened to this on a broken-down tube train between Edgware Road and Paddington. Without this I would probably have had some sort of panic attack. As it is I was distracted and merely lost. It was the perfect soundtrack. And there’s a lot of it.

Tomorrow, we have ten more….including one from birthday boy David Ruffin.
