Day 49 - Nina Simone

Welcome to the latest instalment of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing. Day 49.

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

Today’s selections is dedicated to Nina Simone. This blog is impressionistic and fucking vague. It’s all about the playlist.

Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood – Nina Simone True story. Nina Simone was playing when I lost my virginity. I wasn’t at a concert or anything. Anyway, that sordid detail aside – always loved a little bit of the divine Ms S. If I could, I’d pick this clip of her singing Sinatra’s For A While because the studio version just isn’t very good.

School of Design – Tiny Ruins. Melancholy indie folk of the highest calibre from New Zealand.

Boss Hoss - Sonics Proper fucking garage rock from one of Mark E Smith’s favourite bands. The joint best song about a car ever.

Throw the R Away - Proclaimers Paul Sinha mentioned this song on a podcast years ago and though, like anyone with a human heart, I can be moved in the right circumstances by Sunshine on Leith, I’m more drawn to this fuck-you-I-won’t-talk-how-you-tell-me anthem.

Some Things Last A Long Time – Daniel Johnston. There’s a case to be made that this is the saddest song ever recorded, all things considered. About as heartfelt a case of unrequited love as there’ll ever be. Poor Daniel…

I See It, I Like It, I Want It – Shirley Ellis. Because we needed cheering up after that and this is glorious.

Township Funk – DJ Mujava Instrumental interlude time! Absolute electro filth from South Africa.

Legend of Xanadu – Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. Dave Dee and Mick get away without nicknames as one of the worst named bands ever get to make an absolutely mental pop record.

Billie Jean – Civil Wars Michael Jackson covered and made all Southern Gothic country and shit. I don’t know if there will be a Jacko record in this blog, all things considered it seems wrong tbh.

I < 3 U So (Skream remix)– Cassius To finish, a little bit of absolute old skool techno revivalism. Thanks for putting up with this nonsense. Tomorrow, we celebrate Ernie K-Doe…
