Here's to you Mr Robinson

Welcome to the latest instalment of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing. Day 46.

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

Today’s selections is dedicated to birthday boy Smokey Robinson. Today’s blog will be impressionistic and fucking vague. It’s all about the playlist.

Tears of A Clown – Smokey Robinson and the Miracles Bob Dylan reckoned old Smokey was the greatest songwriter alive apparently. And who’s going to argue with old Bob? Only song to namecheck Pagliacci in the playlist, I guarantee it.

I Can’t Tell The Bottom From The Top - Hollies. I genuinely think this song might be the most underrated love song ever. Kevin Rowland covered it once, I think this was during his bizarre male lingerie stage, and I love it but sometimes the original is the best.

Born to Be Wild - Steppenwolf This song is always a hundred times better than you think it’s going to be. Put this on in the pub and watch.

Baker Street – Gerry Rafferty AIR SAX!!! BOB HOLNESS!! ETC!!

Shipbuilding – Robert Wyatt. Another artist I keep meaning to explore more of. Pretty timeless sadly. One day we won’t need anti-war songs. We’ll all be dead mind.

Chiaroscuro – Alessandro Cortini. Instrumental interlude time! And I know what chiaroscuro means too because I’m dead clever and stuff. Also I read the word once in a review of Unknown Pleasures and that’s where I learned it because I went to a shit school and they only taught you what they were legally required to.

Our Hearts Are Wrong – Jessica Mayfield Arresting opening line corner.

In Your Dreams – Dark Dark Dark. My notes read Cajun Arcade Fire. Clearly I was tired. But yeah this is a bit voodoo.

Nose on the Grindstone – Tyler Childers Beautiful, dopesick, anguished country blues from the hills of pain.

Double Barrel – Dave and Ansel Collins Thankfully we’ve reached the end of this hurried screed. A piece of irresistible reggae to cheer the Mondays away. Anyway, thanks for putting up with this shit – tomorrow we celebrate birthday boy Kurt Cobain.
