Jay Kay Growling

Welcome to the belated latest instalment of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing. Day 31.

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

Today’s selections is dedicated to birthday peeps Jay Kay.

Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground Everyone has got one good song even this fucking irritant. The only good thing about Roland Emmerich’s otherwise execrable Godzilla is this song. It’s so bad it means running over two old ladies in Ireland isn’t the worst thing Matthew Broderick ever did.

Walk Like A Panther – All Seeing I. In the late 90s I occasionally had the misfortune to drink at a Cardiff hostelry called The Orange Kipper. The place stunk of piss. It was grim. Anyway whenever I did this song always seemed to be playing and because this girl I was deeply in love with used to drink there I followed her. Jarvis Cocker wrote it and Tony Christie sang it.

Power – Kanye West Like Jamiroquai, sometimes you got to avoid the personality. The guy can write.

Ride on Time – Black Box Writing a long short story at the moment where this song features quite heavily. Suffice to say it soundtracked a key landmark in my life and whenever I hear it, I’m 18, hopeful and happy again. Still a sucker for an Italian House piano break to this day.

In the Year 2525 – Zager and Evans. Ludicrous but brilliant soul pop monster from one hit wonders.

70s 80s – Nightmares on Wax. Introduced to this by my good pal Simon on a compilation CD he made me, the first one anyone ever made me and it’s stayed a favourite ever since.

The Storm – World of Twist. More Sheffield nonsense. Not quite as glam as ABC nor quite as devilishly weird as Pulp, they ended up missing out on those bands successes.

See My Baby Jive – Wizzard. Roy Wood is a genius. That’s all. I would have put “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day” on but no one needs that just yet.

Violently – Hue and Cry. Really this is fucking shit in a lot of ways but I have very fond memories of a certain girl and this song so you’re going to enjoy this slick Scottish yuppie 80s Filofax soul whether or not you like it.

Stay With Me – Lorraine Ellison. I mean, this selection is just a bit too personal in places and I just want to apologise but when this song came on my Spotify unbidden mere moments after dropping my youngest off at uni for the first time, well, let’s just say there was plenty of undignified sobbing.

Thanks for putting up with this shit – tomorrow we celebrate James Murphy….
