Lightning, Sun and Purple Mountains
I was thinking
of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song.
Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then
nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to
be in tens.
The playlist
is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R
So, the idea was
that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself
or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.
I’m on Twitter X
thing as @fourfoot
Today’s selection
is dedicated to birthday boy Jake Bugg. This blog is impressionistic and
fucking vague. It’s all about the playlist.
Lightning Bolt –
Jake Bugg. Yeah he really likes early Dylan. And so what, there’s worse
things to like.
Paper Sun -
Traffic. Psychedelic maan! Sitars, bongos and the wonderful Steve Winwood.
Play loud, as they used to say….
Your Ex-Lover is
Dead - Stars. “When there’s nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself
on fire.”
That’s Just The
Way That I Feel – Purple Mountains What a loss David Berman continues to
be. Someone who turned their pain into playful, beautiful and engaging songs
and never played up to the myth of the suffering artist.
Cups – Lulu and
the Lampshades. One of those songs you don’t know is an actual song, if you
know what I mean. Some songs just exist in a kind of alternate place, like they’re
trees or something and have always been with us.
When You Were
Young - Killers As a rule, I try not to hear a Killers song if it can be
helped. God awful band but this came out at a time when I was so fucking
miserable and somehow listening to this song on repeat as I made my way through
the developing wreckage of my life towards another shit job elevated me for a
couple of minutes. So, Brandon and gang, I forgive you for all the other crap.
Even THAT song.
Satan Is Real –
Grace Thrillers. Terrifying old school religious country music time!
Life’s A Beach –
Django Django. My tasting notes read “Home Counties B-52s”. I shouldn’t be
allowed near wine at times. It’s a fucking tune, lads.
Over and Over
Again – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. For about ten minutes in 2003 this lot
were going to be the next huge thing but then the press decided to get all in
on Vampire Weekend instead. A dreadful error I’m sure you’ll agree, even more
so when you hear this
One Armed
Scissor – At the Drive-In I dedicate this selection to my old mate Biggie.
I haven’t seen him in nearly 20 years and I should try and find him really. He
looks like Bruce Willis and works behind a bar probably. Anyway, we both loved
this song and bonded over the album it came from.
As ever, your love is taken as read. Thanks for putting up
with this shite. Tomorrow, we celebrate Saul Williams.
