National Anthems

Welcome to the latest instalment of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing. Day 41.

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

Today’s selections is dedicated to birthday dude Matt Berninger of The National.

Afraid of Everyone - National Didn’t know which to choose by these, I have several favourites. Initially wanted Gospel, then Mistaken for Strangers, thought about Turtleneck and Bloodbuzz Ohio. Went for this. It suits the mood I’m in today, which is the mood I’m in a lot of the time, fearful and apprehensive. No one soundtracks that mood better.

Insistor – Tapes N Tapes. Gothic rockabilly early Pixies esque yelping or your money back.

Man Called Aerodynamics – Guided By Voices A band with songs as short as their set lists are long. Game of Pricks was the first thing I heard by them on Peel I think sometime late 95. And I was hooked, Robert Pollard is a genius and this is classic GBV, 2 minutes of where did that melody come from noisy surrealist pub-indie.

Sam – Boss Hog  I think this was a spin off from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Royal Trux or something like that. Anyway, it has the filthiest bassline you’ll hear today and you need that sometimes.

Babylon’s Burning - Ruts. Every now and then I find myself humming this and I have to tell myself I’m more punk than I think. Even sat here as I am in a Marks and Spencer cardigan.

Half-Timer – Young Knives You couldn’t move in 2005 for new “indie” acts whoring their wares out for Zane Lowe to masturbate over. Most of them are now deservedly forgotten. But this lot were kind of interesting – somewhere between (British) Sea Power and XTC with their whimsical melancholy. But I like this as a kind of interlude thing, it contains gentle bitterness, a winning combo.

A Forest – Nouvelle Vague Every Goth in the land bristled with dry iced outrage at this cover before hearing it. I just made that up. But a Latiny bossa nova sexy cover of a Cure song? Who’d have thunk it? It’s brilliant.

Gone With The Wind Is My Love – Rita and the Tiaras I love this song. I first heard it when I was doing some research for a skateboarding documentary I was writing subtitles for. Lord knows what I’d misspelt to google but this You Tube came on and I forgot all about ollies and shit like that and got lost in a happy soulful reverie.

High on a Rocky Ledge – Moondog You’re either going to love this or hate this. I’ll leave it there. You will know his Bird’s Lament and I nearly went with that but this contains oceans of loveliness.

My Mind’s on Leaving, But My Heart Won’t Let Me Go – Honey Cone It was Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap who mentioned the joy of this song on one of his much missed middle of the night song tweeting threads. Disco/soul/heartbreak. The holy trinity…

Thanks for putting up with this shit – tomorrow we celebrate birthday boy Tim Buckley.
