O Withnail, Where Art Thou

Welcome to the belated latest instalment of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing. Day 35.

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

Today’s selections is dedicated to birthday dude King Curtis.

A Whiter Shade of Pale – King Curtis As for many a young man of my generation, Withnail and I was something of a cultural touchstone and even though I now cringe whenever I hear anyone a bit too fond of the film quoting it, it’s still very special to me. And this piece of music really couldn’t have been better deployed in its opening scene. The sixties are drawing to an end and old Marwood really is drifting into the arena of the unwell…

Hard Time Killing Floor Blues – Chris Thomas King. More stuff from films. Drew up a ranking of my own favourite Coen Bros films the other day and this was way ahead of Big Lebowski, the most overrated of their efforts.

Bluebird – Jim White I used to have this on one of the first compilation CDs I ever burnt for my commute. This was in the summer of 2004? Anyway, things were going much nicer for me then. I could close my eyes and pretend I wasn’t on a Valleys train going to a call centre but on a steamboat heading down the Mississippi and maybe drinking a mint julep or something. Either way, the dude made a weird documentary around this time which is pretty good too. No, you Google it.

Love Moment (Ulrich Schanuss remix) – Justin Robertson Beautiful, ambient loveliness that sounds like OMD’s Souvenir on really good painkillers.

Criticize – Alexander O’Neal. Ha ha. Such a tune. And, being the cliched fucking Essex wanker my mate Lee is, he fucking dressed like him when he went out for a bit. What is it with those silly cunts? Pie and mash sweetheart and shove a bit of Vandross on while you’re there. Fanks dahling. Off ahm nah to watch a facking Krays movie innit.

If Only – Kojey Radical. Think it was the late Neil Kulkarni who mentioned this on his blog. Anyway, that’s endorsement enough isn’t it. The poetry, vision and politics present in all great hip hop all on show.

Not Over Yet - Grace.  Because it’s a great pop record and even the Klaxons couldn’t fuck it up.

Do You Realize – Flaming Lips? Apparently this is now one of the most popular songs people choose for their funeral. It’s a fucking beautiful thing certainly and Wayne and the lads will probably never be toppled from my Most Jaw Dropping Live Act I ever did see. The Flaming Lips in Grangetown, ah man, that’s up there with Jason Lytle in Pentyrch for how the fuck did this happen bookings. Do You Realize is Space Oddity x Into My Arms divided by Monty Python’s Galaxy Song and none of those things at the same time.

Ain’t No Pleasing You – Chas and Dave. One of the greatest songs ever written. Even if they did support bastard Spurs.

What A Lonely Way to Start the Summertime – Bitter Sweets. And, to finish, this little slice of post Shangri-La weirdness.

Thanks for putting up with this shit – tomorrow we celebrate Daft Punk’s Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo….
