Cooder Be Magic

Welcome to the latest instalment of the badly titled Everyone Has Got one Good Song blog thing. Day 72!

I was thinking of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song. Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to be in tens.

The playlist is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R

So, the idea was that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.

I’m on Twitter X thing as @fourfoot

PARIS, TEXAS – Ry Cooder. Today’s birthday boy. If you’ve never seen Paris, Texas please remedy that. Don’t do it if you’re heartbroken though. I’m currently heartbroken and just hearing this this morning nearly took me to a place you don’t come back from.

JOLENE – Susanna and the Magic Orchestra Dolly Parton’s tearjerker taken out to the fjord to watch a whale pup being hacked to pieces.

FUTURISMO - Saloon. Weird fuzzy indie pop that puts you in mind of a slightly agitated Broadcast. Or maybe the Delgados feeling dancey.

I NEVER GET LONESOME – Arthur Russell You can probably tell what a happy song this is from the title.

NOBODY KNOWS – Pastor T L Barrett and the Youth for Christ choir. Can’t remember what film this is from, think it’s from Undefeated, but yeah this is epic gospel blues stuff.

GHOSTBUSTERS – Ray Parker Jr  Because it’s a pop classic and YOU KNOW IT.

TICAL – Method Man This is the soundtrack to me walking to my dead end call centre job across Cardiff in the summer of 2000, became obsessed with this song and I had it at either end of a fucking great compilation tape that was probably thrown out as documented in my award-winning (not award-winning really) short story Tapes.

DEAD RINGER – Meat Loaf Got any songs that remind you of your grandad dying, Paul? Yes, I have! This was playing when I found out! But it’s fucking amazing. And I haven’t (even) done my (traditional) joke about how much he (Meat Loaf) loved parentheses.

WE DON’T HAVE TO – Ella Eyre The absolute zenith of slightly downbeat covers of pop classics.

LORD KNOWS BEST – Dirty Beaches Obscure shit corner. Except it’s not shit.

As ever, your love is taken as read. Thanks for putting up with this shite. Tomorrow, normal service is resumed. Your disappointment is taken as read, also. It’s that Fred Neil’s birthday tomorrow….
