My Brother Charles The Fantastic Man
I was thinking
of building the ultimate playlist with one simple rule. One artist. One song.
Each day will feature a song by an artist whose birthday is that day and then
nine other songs by nine different artists just because people like things to
be in tens.
The playlist
is here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4exU9MUJMWaouOgnu7zmSl?si=I5fqk7VpQX6aDGec7xvqsQ&pi=e-IfIWXc5GT56R
So, the idea was
that you might want to follow and share and either have the playlist yourself
or do your own or chat about it with me, you could use the hashtag #EHGOGS.
I’m on Twitter X
thing as @fourfoot
TAKE IT EASY MY
BROTHER CHARLES – Jorge Ben Jor. Whenever something South American pops up
here you can blame my amigo Fishguard Dave, a man obsessed with all things from
that continent. Anyway, this is a jaunty little number. And one day I will get
to go to South America myself. Magic realism and mojitos. I will win the Euros
and go…
TEENAGE DIRTBAG
- Wheatus I should hate this really but it’s always felt like a sweet
little song to me, a slice of sincerity which any teenage loser past or present
can associate with. And trust me, was I a loser. What do you mean, you already
know? Well, that hurts…
C’MON, C’MON – Von
Bondies ANTHEMIC LOUD GUITAR RAWK FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF IPODS
21 SECONDS – So Solid
Crew. It was amazing then, it’s amazing now.
DON’T MAKE ME
WAIT – Emma Pollock Former Delgado doesn’t stray too far from the old band’s
blueprint of slightly broken, beautifully arranged chamber indie. And why
should she?
JUICE - Lizzo Heard
this for the first time whilst waiting to go for dinner with a secret crush.
And it was a sunny evening and there was a funfair outside. Anyway, nothing
happened except I spotted BBC sports presenter Jason Mohammed on the next table
and I couldn’t stop humming this fucking tune.
INDIANA – Adrienne
Lenker Her new solo album comes out today. If you don’t know her band Big
Thief then you need to. She’s the best songwriter of her generation.
FANTASTIC MAN –
William Onyeabor Without wanting to get all Losing My Edge about it, I knew
about this track before it’s recent exposure in a big advertising campaign. But
it was Fishguard Dave (above) who got me into it. I think I read something
about a load of synthesizers being seized off a stricken ship by Nigerian
officials who distributed them amongst the country’s schools. Something like
that. Anyway, I like the story almost as much as I like this tune.
THE MAN WHO TOLD
EVERYTHING - Doves This song was playing whilst I was waiting for my mate
to pick me up and drive me a hundred miles to see my Dad who was gravely ill in
hospital. I think the song is about fame. I don’t think it’s about fathers. But
everytime I hear it I’m back in my bedsit, staring out the window at the
driving rain wondering if it’s going to be too late when I arrive.
HARRY IRENE –
Captain Beefheart. I like the more melodic Beefheart stuff cos the other
stuff is too mad for me tbh. Anyway, I dedicate this selection to my mate Garry
who got me into it one weekend in the North of England.
As ever, your love is taken as read. Thanks for putting up
with this shite. Tomorrow, normal service is resumed. Your disappointment is
taken as read, also. It’s that Damon Albarn’s birthday tomorrow….
